ABSTRACTION IN FREEDOM
ABOUT:
The stimulus that helped translate my concept 'Abstraction in Freedom', was my attention to peoples tendency to forget how lucky we are being surrounded by such mystical and eye appealing environments that are handed to us for free. My initial inspiration sprung amongst me when I went for a random adventure in the middle of the week to Trenthem Falls. I remember being mesmerised looking deep into a waterfall that sprayed out tiny watery particles that floated in the air and surrounded my body. It made me feel thankful and full inside which steered my concept to using earthy, natural, colour tones and creating symbols to represent this experience.

My research drifted to inspiration coming from geometric tattoo artwork that influenced my collections silhouettes. Wanting to create a playful, warm aesthetic to my designs- I explored embroidering motifs that literally reflect a natural environment. Choosing to work with PVC was a interpretation of the transparent watery particles I saw at Tretham Falls.
Having three different options of fabric to choose from which was a compulsory constraint given to us by our project leader, the beige linen was a perfect option for my outcome. Having learnt a range of different skills through out my first year at Uni- we had to involve a few of them into this collection to reflect our understanding. I further explored draping to build a fluid oversized upper garment, as well as working around the crotch to modify it in my case, forming a drop crotch. I also was inspired by kimono sleeves where I added my own flare to it by incorporating a slit up the back seam that led to a stretchy cuff. I used four eyelets as fastenings on the back upper garment to thread through the lacing trim. All the embroidered coloured motifs were done by hand and sewn to PVC.
